A personal challenge to work through Smith’s non-adhesive bindings using polymer clay for the covers.

Yep, even got some pics for this one! I’ve actually been working on it sporadically (in between making dolls and handling non-artistic responsibilities, which think should be banned like asbestos). Read the rest of this entry »

Sidetracked again. I do have my text block ready for the double pamphlet although I haven’t filled it yet (can’t decide if I’m going to write/collage/draw/paint before or after I bind it). Read the rest of this entry »

Just when you thought it was safe…
I got distracted by all manner of things to do–trip to a 6-acre flea market/antique show, trying to complete some samples for an Etsy shop, a couple of dolls, lice (forced Spring Cleaning is EVIL), as well as various and sundry personal issues that came up. Plus, I confess, I was really tired of pamphlets and just couldn’t motivate myself to think very much about doing yet another pamphlet, even one with such an interesting structure. Went to Canton, Texas–First Monday Trade Days–last week for the first time. The main grounds is six acres of vendors selling literally everything from antiques to junk. I think we walked almost the whole six acres but there was no way to see everything. Read the rest of this entry »

I haven’t forgotten about this project–just been busy working on other projects, being sick, nursing sick children, etc. I do have some ideas for the next double-fold pamphlet but I’ve been sidetracked by making paper for a different project and making samples for my soon-to-open Etsy store. I’ve been thoroughly enjoying making the samples and will try to remember to post pics here (or at least a link to my Etsy store once it’s set up) when I have them ready.
To be continued….

I finally finished it! The pc-infused fabric worked well–it’s very flexible, punching holes in it with a needle tool was no problem and I haven’t seen any weak spots developing. The fabric, of course, adds strength to the liquid clay. I cut out leaf shapes from various fabrics, then backed them with green pearl polymer clay, added veins with a needle tool and cured them. The clay side was then “antiqued” with various acrylics (bronze, gold, and black).

It’s slow going because I keep having to redesign this cover. The pc-infused fabric didn’t work the way I expected for the leaves so I’m playing around with a slightly revised version of it. I still think it will work for the spine, I’m just having problems making it work in the particular design I have in mind. Hopefully, I’ll be able to work on it further today and will have some pics to post soon.

I have an idea for doing the regular 5-hole pamphlet using pc-infused fabric. I’ve been playing around with layouts and fabrics for the cover. The design is, of course, more complicated than I should be doing but I’m enjoying working on it and that’s what counts. The idea is for the cover itself to be various leaf shapes in different fabrics with handmade floral paper (flower and leaf inclusions in the paper) as the signature. I’m using a green fabric for the spine and a portion of the front and back cover, with the various leaves overlapping it and each other. Read the rest of this entry »

So I did a variation of the 5-hole pamphlet using the head and tail as sewing stations.
