Thanks so much for commenting. I ended up leaving the wacky endpapers in place and have just been using the book for a personal sketchbook for my doll designs. Most people who see the book in person actually compliment me very highly on it, so I expect I was being a bit over-critical. Although, there are a couple of spots that were out and out mistakes on my part, I can't expect to get it perfect the first time :) And I certainly haven't given up on the leather bookbinding--in fact I come up with ideas pretty regularly to try in leather so I'll be back at it soon.

I have been at your site, by the way, while doing a bit of research on leathers for bookbinding. I found your article on using sheepskin for bookbinding--excellent article. I've got your site bookmarked for future perusal, as I have the time.

Thanks again!

Very sorry to hear that your first expedition into leather binding turned out less well than hoped for.
30 years ago when I was at college doing a 2 year full time intensive course in bookbinding and paper conservation, I had this dreadful habit of casing my books in upside down. I suppose I must have ruined 4 or 5 of my books in this way, so it happens to the best of us.

Come over to my site sometime, I don't have a blog, I think I am to old for them :)

Best Wishes

Well, thanks everyone for the comments. I never got an email on these so I didn't even realize they were here--I hate not responding to comments.

Not sure about the tagging thing. I'm not overly fond of the chain-letter type of thing but this one seems kind of fun. I might at least answer the questions and link back to you guys. Not sure I'll be tagging anyone else.

Argh! I was just coming here to tag you, and I see I've been trumped. Hmf. Well, consider yourself double-tagged, so you'll just have to link back to both of us.

Congrats on getting the taxes done, by the way. I shudder to think what mine will be like this year.

Thanks! I cure at the regular temp (275) for everything I make, for at least a half-hour each time. These covers were cured four times. I think the first curing on the covers (the base layer without trans) was probably around 40 minutes. The medallion on front was cured separately because it's so thick (probably for an hour) and all subsequent curings of the covers were 30 minutes. I confess I wasn't overly concerned about browning because it would've just added to the antiqed look, but covering with a tent of foil will usually take care of that, when it is a concern.

This is a beautiful piece. What temp do you use to keep multiple curings of trans from burning?
