Leather Smeather

Posted by Lady Artisan under: General Bookbinding.

I made my first full-leather binding using veg-tanned calf, covering the boards, carving and dying the leather and then gluing the text block sewn on tapes into book board in grooves cut to fit the tapes.

Playing Catch Up

Posted by Lady Artisan under: General Bookbinding; General Rambling; KSProject.

I’ve started two posts here over the past few months and never finished either of them. But both are worth finishing so I’ll endeavor to get them done in the next month or so and get them posted. Fortunately, I never promised to be daily about this or I’d have failed miserably.

Happy Holidays to Me!

Posted by Lady Artisan under: General Bookbinding; General Rambling.

So, after all the rough spots of living life in November and early December (personal stuff like car wrecks [no injuries but the vehicle was totaled], illness, and general lack of funds), we finally hit an upswing and ended up having a really nice holiday. Meaning we could actually buy gifts for the kids (sticking with electronics mostly so we didn’t have to worry about lead/mercury/undefined chemical poisoning on the “well-tested-and-it’s-all-safe-now” toys being currently marketed. And we got gifts for each other. Actually, I mostly got gift cards–the generic kind, which I like best since there are places online I like to get things from.

Faux Leather Scroll Pendants

Posted by Lady Artisan under: General Bookbinding.

Well, I’ve just come off of a sculpting binge and I’m worse about updating my sculpting blog than this one so, if you’re into sculpting, check my Etsy shop for my latest offerings there or check my Flickr page for what’s posted there (as of this writing, I haven’t added any of my sculpture photos there).

Lillian’s Journal

Posted by Lady Artisan under: General Bookbinding.

I had a customer order a customized 6″ x 4″ journal from me. My standard designs for the personalized journals are pretty straightforward–a vintage-look journal with beige, worn and scratched looking covers; a girly journal with pink covers lightly textured with lace and a love letter rubber stamp on the inside covers; and a green, garden journal with small plant elements impressed into the covers and simple relief leaves. I’ve been blogged!

Posted by Lady Artisan under: General Rambling.

Still working on my Lillian journal post and how-to, but I thought I’d share the exciting news–a famous polymer clay artist, Kim Cavender, found my work over on Flickr and spotlighted me in her blog!

You can find the post at her blog.

The Garden of Her Heart–Partial Repost

Posted by Lady Artisan under: General Bookbinding.

I did a charity event on Etsy in September and the coordinator of that even (Janyce, sojournquilts.etsy.com) invited the participants to do an interview for her blog. Since I created a journal to sell for the event, one of her questions to me was about the process for making this journal. When I originally posted this, I prefaced it with a loooong list of excuses for why I hadn’t been working on my Keith Smith project (working through his books using polymer clay covers). This is the description and ramble behind my Garden of Her Heart journal.

Accordion Crazy

Posted by Lady Artisan under: General Bookbinding.

medievalreliefcloseupm.jpgI volunteered to teach our local polymer clay guild how to make accordion books with relief work on the front cover. Had to make samples so I had fun coming up with four different samples, two were very easy, one was pretty easy, and the fourth was rather detailed. The sculpting, of course, takes the longest time, although tearing the paper can be an interesting challenge in mathematics sometimes. Read the rest of this entry »
